A man is in custody after he assaulted a Cottonwood Police officer while resisting arrest.
According to the Cottonwood Police Department, on the morning of June 2, 2021 just after 9:00, officers responded to the area of Verde Heights Drive for a report of a male subject attempting to enter a home that was supposed to be vacant.
As officers were en route, multiple callers reported that the man was going throughout the neighborhood trying to enter several more homes.
When officers arrived they located 23-year-old Cottonwood resident, Ian Gage Mata in the roadway where he was yelling at passing motorist and making obscene gestures.
When officers attempted to contact Ian, he became aggressive and began yelling and running towards them. Ian then attempted to shut a car door on one of the responding officers as he was attempting to exit his vehicle. Ian continued resisting arrest and one of the officers sustained a minor injury to his hand. The officer later received medical treatment for this injury.
Ian Mata was booked into the Yavapai County Jail for Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, Criminal Trespassing, Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Damage and a misdemeanor warrant.
